What is Chiropractic?
The human spinal cord is the lifeline of the body. It is responsible for supplying the entire body with all the information it needs from the brain to perform any task imaginable. The body can live for 3 minutes without air, 3 days without water, and 2 months without food. However, we cannot survive a even a second without information from the brain delivered through the nervous system.
The brain and spinal cord are so important that they are the only organs entirely encased in bone. The body, in its infinite wisdom, divided the spinal cord’s casing, the spine, into 25 movable segments called vertebrae. This allows the body to move. The down side of full mobility is that anything that moves runs the risk of getting stuck. A subluxation is when one or more vertebra “get stuck” out of place, interfering with the nerves exiting the spinal cord on their way to the rest of the body. It is this process that interferes with the innate intelligence flow from the brain to the body and simply put, the body does not function at its best. This leaves us more prone to illness and injuries.
Causes of Subluxation
Stress, in its many forms, is the main cause of subluxations. Physical stress comes in the form of slips, falls, gym injuries, accidents, sitting at a computer all day, etc. Mental Stress comes from work, paying bills, traveling in and around New York City, etc. Emotional stress can be felt in arguments with spouses, loss of a loved one, etc. Chemical stress is due to the toxins we take into the body (caffeine, alcohol, narcotic drugs, prescription drugs, nicotine, and pollution).
The goal of the chiropractic adjustment is to realign the vertebrae allowing information to flow freely from brain to body. It is in this state that we become most capable of managing and adapting to stress. Each adjustment is tailored to each person’s needs as well as their personal preferences.
